Black Liberation Theology and Nervous System Science

← Back to Journal

Chronic oppression shapes the nervous system. Liberation that ignores the nervous system risks reproducing domination internally.

Black Liberation Theology teaches us that freedom is a divine right and that the divine is always on the side of the oppressed. But theology must meet biology. When bodies have been conditioned by chronic stress, hyper-vigilance, and systemic harm, a cognitive understanding of freedom is not enough. The body must actually feel safe enough to accept it.

Healing-informed education bridges this crucial gap. By understanding how our nervous systems respond to trauma, we can develop practices that physically regulate our bodies. We stop internalizing the chaos of the outside world and start embodying peace. Liberation stops being just a theory and becomes a daily practice of physiological regulation and rest.
